Southland Research Paper :
The end of the school year is here and with it came finals. A large part of the final was to write a research paper base on a community mention in the book Southland by Nina Revoyr and discuss its importance to Los Angeles. I choose Little Tokyo as the community I wanted to focus on. This assignment was a huge deal for me because as a freshmen in college I had no idea how to write a 7-10 page paper. The most we were ever required to write in high school was about a 2-3 page paper. Working on it in class and going through it in steps was a major help. Breakings up the paper really help lessen the work load and actually made it seem possible. I found the most challenging part of writing the paper was going over all the research and trying to incorporate it with what I was trying to convey and what I thought was most important. I feel that if given a bit more time to work on my paper I would want to try to write an essay more in a friendlier voice and less the voice of strictly facts and reasons. The facts and reasons are an important part of the paper and do help prove my point of Little Tokyo’s importance to Los Angeles but I feel that it comes off as more of a travel guide discussing the community instead of a friendly voice of a person who lives in the area. That being said I am really proud of the paper I written. I can honestly say that I put in everything I got in that paper and tried my best to accomplish what was asked. It is the longest paper I written and with this under my belt I feel more confident in my writing abilities and myself as a student in general. I understand that entering college this was only the tip of the iceberg and that with each year it is only going to get tougher. This assignment has showed me that it is not impossible to success in college and gave me the self-confidents to continue with my education. Based on the amount of effort I put in this paper and quality of work I feel that this is an A paper. I feel like I have covered everything to my best capability and also feel like the person who reads this paper will easily see the importance of Little Tokyo to Los Angeles with little to no arguments.
