Pipher Readings Discussion Board
In Mary Piphers "Writing to Change the World" she starts her book off with a quote by Woody Allen about the crossroads you encounter in life and uses this idea of Woody Allen's point of view to talk about the many point of views there are in writing. In the introduction Piphers list the history of mankind and talks about how with each problem that faces us we show little to unknowing compassion. She argues that information is easily reachable but wisdom is not. Piphers then brings up the power of words and the good or bad they can do depending on who is the one speaking them. she ends introduction by offering a solution of honesty. Saying that the government should be honest about the problems that face the community and have a open discussion on how to fix them instead of lying to the public and frighting and isolating them.
Important points
Reading these chapters I feel the most important points are knowing yourself not only as a writer but as a person. When we know ourself we can focus that part of us in our writing and give our writing that personal voice that the reader will hear and relate too. I also love the idea that all writing can change the world that was brought up in chapter 1. When ever we write something we do it to communicate a message and even if that message is as simple as just a note to a friend saying hi we can impact that persons life just by showing some interest.
